Protune
- Shutter — set to 1/(2×fps), then leave it.Protune only offers fps multiples — no arbitrary values.
- ISO — floor it. Min 100.Set ISO Min = ISO Max to lock; keep the ceiling low for clean log.
- ND — your only exposure dial.No aperture + ISO at floor means a screw-on ND is the sole way to cut light.
- EV Comp — trim to taste, ±2 EV.0.5-stop steps; can't rescue an over-lit slow shutter — that's ND's job.

Daylight cinematic shutter: reach for ND8 or ND16. Twist-on filters keep the waterproof seal.
Color & GP-Log
Protune Color
- Natural / Vibrant / Flat — the standard color picks. Flat grades best; Vibrant is share-ready. FAST TURNAROUND
- GP-Log — HERO12 is the first GoPro with a log profile. 10-bit, maximum grading latitude; GoPro publishes an official LUT. GRADED WORK
GP-Log needs 4K or 5.3K (10-bit) — and forces HEVC. It can't run with HDR video (pick one). Expose to protect highlights; pull down in the grade.

- 8:7 is the full sensor (5.3K/4K only) — the widest capture and the one to shoot for reframing to 16:9 and 9:16.
- 10-bit + GP-Log live in 4K and up. 2.7K/1080p are 8-bit only.
- HEVC for everything high-end (5.3K, 4K, 10-bit, high fps). Up to 120 Mb/s at Bit Rate → High.

- Widest is 156° — Wide lens, 8:7, HyperSmooth Off. (177° needs the Max Lens Mod 2.0.)
- No Narrow lens on HERO12. HyperView/SuperView are 16:9 only.
- Shoot Wide, reframe in post — HyperView is stretched and can't be cleanly un-warped.

No "Boost" mode on HERO12 — it's Off / On / AutoBoost. More stabilization = tighter FOV. Full 360° Horizon Lock is Linear-only and not available at 5.3K60, 4K120, or 240 fps — those get the weaker Horizon Leveling.
Action-cam truths
Field
- Mount check. The shot you can't reshoot dies on a loose mount. Tug it before you commit.
- ND in daylight. No aperture means a slow shutter needs ND — or it clips.
- Shoot Wide, reframe later. HyperView can't be un-stretched; Wide keeps your options.
- Lock exposure. ISO Min = Max, WB in Kelvin. Auto pumps mid-shot, baked in forever.
- Mind the heat. 5.3K60 in sun cuts out before the battery dies. Airflow, shade, or drop res.
- One known-good card. A slow microSD aborts the take. V30 / UHS-3 / A2, tested.
- Frame for the horizon. Lock is Linear-only — decide before you roll, not after.
- Shoot handles. Roll 3 s before and after. POV cuts still need meat.
- Audio is half the film. No 3.5mm jack — Media Mod or Bluetooth, and deadcat the wind.
- Charge and offload nightly. One Enduro won't last a day; verify the card before you wipe it.
Field gotchas
Setup
- No GPS. HERO12 dropped it — no speed/altitude/route overlays from the camera. Pair a watch or phone for telemetry.
- Thermal is the #1 failure. High-res long takes in heat, sun, or still air shut down early. Keep airflow; drop to 4K when it's hot.
- The card stops the take. Too-slow microSD = aborted recording. V30 / UHS-3 minimum, A2 recommended; up to 1TB officially supported.
- Seal = waterproofing. 10 m (33 ft) only with the side door latched and the gasket clean. An open USB door voids it.
- New 1/4-20 thread. Mounts straight to a tripod/gimbal — don't overtighten a metal screw into the plastic base.
